Tended is proud to announce that it has been named one of TIME's Best Inventions of 2023 for its groundbreaking geofencing wearables that enhance rail worker safety.

Today, TIME revealed its annual list, which features the most extraordinary innovations changing our lives, including Tended’s cutting-edge safety solution, the world's most powerful supercomputer, NASA’s MOXIE that can extract oxygen from Mars’ atmosphere and Apple’s Vision Pro headset. This recognition highlights Tended's commitment to revolutionising rail operations and ensuring the safety of workers in the industry.

Since 2017, there have been 15 workforce fatalities on the rail network. Tended's aim is to put an end to these through the use of geofencing technology which enables organisations to create virtual boundaries around safe working zones on worksites, and then alert workers using a highly accurate wearable device if they move into a potentially unsafe position. This technology is designed to stop individuals from straying into hazardous areas, helping to put an end to preventable accidents and fatalities for trackside workers.

It also offers improved worksite visibility by providing a live view of vehicles and assets. Real-time alerts are triggered in response to potential safety incidents, such as vehicles approaching predefined zones or equipment left on the tracks. These early warnings serve to prevent point breaches, which result in consequent damage, significant cost overruns, and network disruptions, and also ensure effective site clearance upon project completion, reducing the risk of collisions when lines are reopened.

A company known for its rapid growth and forward-thinking approach to creating safer workplaces, Tended was founded in 2017 by Lincoln-based entrepreneur Leo Scott Smith, whose leadership earned him a spot on the Forbes 30 under 30 list. Tended has also recently announced its £1.4m project with the European Space Agency, in which it will leverage space-based assets and advanced technologies to advance its current capabilities even further and deliver the next generation of geospatial technology.

Acknowledging Tended’s pioneering approach to integrating geospatial technology and wearables to bolster workplace safety, TIME - renowned for its authoritative coverage of innovation and technology - has recognised the company’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of safety.

“We are honoured to have been included in TIME's prestigious list of Best Inventions for 2023,” said Leo Scott Smith, Tended's CEO and Founder. “This acknowledgement highlights the importance of our technology in the rail sector and the workers we aim to protect. It's an accolade that belongs to the whole team at Tended who are dedicated to developing game-changing technology that will transform safety and efficiency within the rail industry."

Beyond its TIME recognition, Tended has also earned a place on the Digital Leaders 100 list for Geospatial Initiative of the Year 2023 and was acknowledged at the prestigious National Rail Awards for Innovation of the Year 2023.

With the business experiencing rapid growth and an expanding customer base, Tended is actively seeking passionate individuals to join its mission of creating safer workplaces with groundbreaking technology.
