This week we are delighted to announce the newest member of the Tended team - Tom Evans!

Tom hails from Wrexham and joins us as an Embedded Engineer. He brings with him a vast amount of embedded experience garnered from companies operating in industrial, communication and defence sectors, most recently working at Texecom and formerly JCB.

A new integral member of the engineering team, Tom will support the volume production and continuous quality improvement of Tended’s geofencing Wearables, assisting in developing plenty of exciting and useful new features to ensure our system always meets our customer needs!

We took five minutes out of the day to chat with Tom and get to know him a little better...

What will you be doing/be responsible for in your new role at Tended?

I will be responsible for Tended's wearable embedded software solutions. I'm looking forward to working with a fantastic team to implement new software and quality processes, to ensure our products are feature-rich and reliable.

How do you think the work Tended is doing will impact the railway industry?

Simple. Tended wearables are saving rail workers' lives.

What are you most looking forward to about working at Tended?

I’m hugely impressed with the drive and work ethic of so many people at Tended. I’m looking forward to working with intelligent and enthusiastic people who are committed to Tended’s safety-based ethos.

What motivates you at work?

I’m motivated by being part of a dynamic team that is dedicated to producing feature-packed and dependable products. I get a kick out of the creativity and challenge that embedded software design brings. Modern software development practices are improving the quality of devices through build and test automation, and I’m pleased to be part of Tended’s engagement in these practices through DevOps and Continuous Integration. Ultimately, this creates high-quality products that save lives, which is inspirational.

What’s going to be the most exciting part about your job?

I’m looking forward to learning from and collaborating with the hugely talented and enthusiastic team at Tended. I get a buzz from seeing a design concept turning into a usable solution to a real-world problem, and Tended’s dynamic nature will surely enable this.

Do you have any pets?

We have a little Border Terrier named Caper. She loves people but wants to fight all other dogs, so I call her “The Terrorist”!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love to spend time with my wife and 2 daughters. When I’m not taxi-ing my girls to various sports practices, I enjoy exercising at my local CrossFit gym. Every other Saturday, I work as a Turnstile Operator at my beloved Wrexham Football Club. I like to relax by singing (terribly loud) and playing guitar (very badly) in my man cave.

How would your friends describe you?

They’d probably say I tell too many bad dad jokes, and talk about CrossFit and Wrexham FC far too much! Hopefully, they’d also say I’m hard-working, kind and fun-loving.

What’s something you’re proud of doing in your lifetime?

Most of all, I’m proud of my beautiful family. I’m also proud of graduating from Oxford University, producing some decent software, and finally learning to backflip at age 47!

Thanks, Tom - it's brilliant to have you join us!
